No fuss, no booking, no pressure
Your first time at table tennis: what to know before you turn up
If you are wondering whether you can just turn up to a first time table tennis session in Maitland without booking or experience, the answer is yes. Maitland Social Table Tennis Club runs open, relaxed sessions where new faces are always welcome. This page covers everything you need to know before you walk in.
Yes, you can just turn up
There is no booking system, no registration form, and no skills test. Pick a session from the timetable, head to Pat Hughes Community Hall on Taylor Avenue in Thornton, and you will be in the right place.
Friday evening from 6:30pm to 8:30pm is the recommended starting point for new players. There is a good mix of people and the pace is relaxed. Friendly regulars are happy to help newcomers get a game going.
What to bring and what to wear
You do not need to bring any equipment. Bats and balls are provided at every session. If you already have your own bat, feel free to bring it, but there is no need to rush out and buy one.
Wear comfortable clothes you can move around in, and flat shoes with a grip, like sneakers or cross-trainers. Table tennis involves a fair bit of shuffling and stepping, so avoid thongs or dress shoes. Bring a water bottle as well.
- Bats provided, no equipment purchase needed
- Comfortable clothes and flat shoes (sneakers are fine)
- Bring a water bottle
- No bag or sporting gear required
What happens when you arrive
Walk in, introduce yourself, and let someone know it is your first time. The regulars are a welcoming group and will get you into a game as soon as a table is free. Sessions run for two hours and most people play several games over the course of the session.
There is a $5 session fee paid on the day. After your first session, if you want to keep coming back, you will need a $27 annual Table Tennis NSW membership. Someone at the club can walk you through that when you are ready.
Common questions
I have never played table tennis before. Will I fit in?
Definitely. We have plenty of members who started with no experience at all. The club is social first, and nobody minds if you are still finding your feet.
Do I need to arrive at the start of the session?
You are welcome to turn up any time during the session, though arriving close to the start means you get the most time on the tables.
Can children come along?
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families are a normal part of the sessions, particularly on Friday evenings.
