Never played before? That is fine
Table tennis for beginners in Maitland
Table tennis for beginners in Maitland has a very low barrier to entry at Maitland Social Table Tennis Club. We are a social club, so there is no pressure, no structured program, and no need to be any good. Come along, pick up a bat, and friendly regulars will help you get a game going.
Why beginners do well here
Because we are a social club rather than a competition-focused one, nobody minds if you are still finding your feet. Rallies go short, balls fly off the table, and that is completely normal. The regulars have seen it all and are genuinely happy to play with newcomers.
Bats are provided at no extra cost, so you do not need to buy anything before your first visit. Wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes and bring a water bottle.
- No experience needed at all
- Bats and balls provided
- Friendly regulars happy to help you get a game
- No booking, just turn up
The best session to start with
Friday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:30pm tend to be the most welcoming session for first-timers. There is a comfortable mix of players and a relaxed pace to the night.
Monday and Wednesday sessions run 12:30pm to 2:30pm if the evening does not suit you. All sessions have the same open, social atmosphere.
What a first visit looks like
Walk into Pat Hughes Community Hall on Taylor Avenue in Thornton, pay $5 at the door, and grab a bat. A regular will pair you up for a game and help you settle in. That is genuinely all there is to it.
Once you decide you want to keep coming, you will need the $27 annual Table Tennis NSW membership. You can sort that out after your first session rather than before.
Common questions
I have literally never played. Will I be out of place?
Not at all. Everyone starts somewhere, and the regulars at Maitland Social Table Tennis Club are used to playing with new faces at all levels. Friday evening is the easiest session to walk into for the first time.
Will someone show me the basics?
Friendly regulars are happy to help newcomers get a game. It is a social club, so there is no formal coaching, but people will happily rally with you and give you tips as you go.
Do I need to buy a bat before I come?
No. Bats are provided. Feel free to bring your own if you have one, but there is no need to buy anything before your first visit.
